Arne Johansson was 17-years-old when he joined the Swedish ice hockey team Södertälje SK in 1932, and he remained at the club for more than 20 years. Johansson earned a strong reputation as an excellent goaltender, helping the team to win the Swedish championship in 1941 and 1944. He made his début for the national team in 1938 and went on to play in 89 matches during his career. He competed at multiple editions of the World Championships and was named as the best goaltender at the 1947 tournament in Praha where Sweden won silver. One year later he competed at the 1948 St. Moritz Olympics where the team finished fourth. The ice hockey tournament at the Games also served as the World and European Championships, with Sweden winning silver in the latter as a result. Johansson retired in 1954 and was named the best Swedish goaltender of all time by sports journalists two years later.
