Biography

Stanisław Karpiel was a Polish cross-country skier and solider. Karpiel was a forester and mountain ranger who practiced cross-country skiing from a young age. Karpiel was a four-time national champion, winning the 18 kilometres (1936, 1938), the 50 kilometres (1934), and the 4 × 10 kilometres relay (1937).

Karpiel competed in three events at the 1936 Garmisch-Partenkirchen Olympics. Karpiel was part of the Polish team that finished in seventh place in the 4 × 10 kilometres relay. Karpiel also raced in the 18 kilometres and the 50 kilometres, finishing 42nd and 26th respectively.

During World War II Karpiel was a member of the Home Army (“Armia Krajowa”) where he fought in the Tatra Mountains. Karpiel was noted for thwarting German Alpine soldiers and was awarded the Cross of Valour. His son Józef Karpiel represented Poland at the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics.
