James Iahuat took up boxing in his youth and competed as a light-heavyweight at the Inter-District Games and the South Pacific Games. He switched to the middleweight division in time for the 1986 Commonwealth Games, where he was eliminated in the opening round by Scotland’s George Ferrie. His next stop was the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where he was defeated in round two by Serge Kabongo of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (then Zaire). Subsequently, he held a variety of jobs, including one as boxing coach of the national team and another as a taxi driver, and also dabbled in politics.
