After starting out as a middle-distance runner, Polish athlete Rafał Wójcik moved up to the 3,000 metres steeplechase. From 1994 to 2003 Wójcik was a seven-time national champion in the event, with him also competing at multiple international competitions. In 2000 he was selected to represent Poland at the Sydney Olympics but did not progress from his heat. Two years later, he had better success when he came eighth in the final at the 2002 European Championships in München. A few years later Wójcik began to specialise in the marathon, with him becoming the Polish champion in the event in both 2005 and 2006.
