Finland’s Paavo Korhonen took part in three editions of the individual Olympic Nordic combined tournament, just missing the podium twice in 1952 and 1956 and placing ninth in 1960. In his final year, he was Finland’s flagbearer in the Opening Ceremony and, in 1952, he also competed in cross-country skiing’s 18 kilometres event, finishing 14th. His greatest international achievements were capturing the individual titles at the 1957 Holmenkollen Ski Festival and the 1958 World Championships. He had competed previously at the 1954 World Championships, where he placed 12th in the individual Nordic combined. He was a five-time national champion in this event in 1951, 1954, 1956, 1957, and 1960.
