Vietnamese boxer Đỗ Tiến Tuấn showed promise in the ring but his temper, coupled with a violent streak, led him to an ignominious end. In local domestic tournaments Đỗ won multiple medals, including seven gold and two silver, soon catching the eye of international selectors. In 1988 he was picked to compete in the welterweight class at the Seoul Olympics, but lost his opening bout to Abdellah Taouane of Morocco.
Back in Vietnam Đỗ had gained a reputation as a dirty fighter, eventually leading him to be banned from the sport for eight years in 1994. From here things went from bad to worse after he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for public disorder and destruction of property. Whilst in prison Đỗ turned into a thug and killed two inmates in fights, resulting in his initial sentence being increased to life imprisonment. With no chance of being released he continued to fight whilst incarcerated, but was killed during one of them in early 2020.
