In the late 1950s and early 1960s Juhani Kärkinen was the best ski jumper in Finland, winning the national title on three occasions (1958–59, 1961). In 1958 Kärkinen also became a World Champion when he won gold in the normal hill event at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti. Two years later he was selected to compete in the large hill event at the Squaw Valley Olympics. After a promising start, he was sitting in fourth place after his first jump, but was let down on his second jump, placing 14th, to finish eighth overall. At the very end of the year Kärkinen also won the Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf, Germany.
