Biography

Olavi Köppä competed in speed skating in the late 1970s, becoming the first Finn to skate the 1,500 metres in under two minutes. Although he was never a national champion, Köppä finished second four times (1974–75, 1977–78) and third in 1979. Internationally he competed at two World Championships (1976–77) and three European Championships (1976–78). In 1976 he skated in three events at the Innsbruck Olympics, finishing ninth in the 10,000 metres and 10th in the 1,500 metres. In addition to speed skating, Köppä also played in the Finnish Ice Hockey Federation (TUL) championships.

Personal Bests: 500 – 38.81 (1978); 1000 – 1:18.92 (1979); 1500 – 1:59.20 (1978); 7:28.19 (1978); 10000 – 15:30.91 (1976).
