Educated at Brighton College, Hamilton Markes was a fine cricketer who played for the College first XI. He later played golf for Brighton GC and most of his golf was restricted to playing in local club tournaments in the south of England. After Brighton he moved to Bexley where he played for many years. Throughout most of his golfing career, he played off double figure handicaps, although he did get down to single figures in 1907.
