Biography

Jan Mulder started out as a track sprinter, with his greatest success a third place in the 1899 European Championships in Cologne. He also placed second in the 1901 and 1902 Dutch Championships (for professionals). He also won the 1901 Amsterdam-Utrecht race. But he made his name mainly on the quintuplet - a five person bicycle! - leading the “Quint Mulder” consisting of Jan Slesker, Dirk van den Berg, Jan van der Duyn and Piet Dickentman. The five won the 1898 World Championship for “multiplets” in Vienna, and bettered the world record a year later in Leipzig. His capabilities on these multi-person bicycles soon meant he became a pacer, initially on multiplets, but soon on motorized vehicles. Mulder became one of the first automobile drivers in the Netherlands, and later specialized as a car mechanic. After suffering from bronchitis and pneumonia, he died in 1935.
