Biography

Matti Lampainen was a Finnish ice hockey player whose career spanned from 1949 to 1966. Lampainen played in 169 league matches and won the Finnish championship on five occasions (1953–55, 1958, 1960). He also had a lengthy career with the national team where he played in more than 100 matches. In 1960 he represented Finland at the Squaw Valley Olympics before winning silver two years later at the 1962 European Ice Hockey Championships.

In the summer months Lampainen kept up his fitness levels by cycling. In 1955 he was part of the team that won gold in the 4 km team pursuit at the Finnish championships. Following his career on the ice he became a successful coach, winning two more league titles in 1967 and 1973. Lampainen was later inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.
