After graduating he became head of the sports committee at Libyan University from 1962-70. He was also Secretary-General of the Libyan Table Tennis Federation starting in 1962 and then became first Secretary and then President of the Libyan Athletics Federation. In 1971, at only 34-years-old, he became President of the Libyan Olympic Committee. He later had roles as Vice-President of Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) (1981-85), was on the technical committee for the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) from 1983-87, then becoming Vice-President of ICMG, and was a member of the Executive Board of the Arab Sports Confederation (1976-81).

He remained active in sports administration, however, and, among other things, was a member of the Organizing Committee for the 2013 Mediterranean Games
