Georgios Averof was the nephew of Georgios Averof, who donated the funds that allowed for the restoration of the Pan-Hellenic Stadium used for the 1896 Olympic Games in Athens. The nephew served as President of the Hellenic Olympic Federation from 1924 and was co-opted onto the IOC in March 1926. He served in both roles until his death in Paris in May 1930, but Averof never attended an IOC Session.
