Vladimír Černušák studied science at Comenius University in Bratislava. He later became a professor of physical education on the sport faculty at Comenius from 1968-90, and was the director of the research institute of the Comenius University Physical Education and Sport Faculty from 1966-70.
Černušák was a senior official in the Czechoslovakian Physical Education Association from 1946-92. He served as President of the Slovak Central Committee of the Czechoslovakian Physical Education Association (1969-83) and Vice-President of the Czechoslovakian Olympic Committee (1969-92). After the break-up of Czechoslovakia, Černušák became President of the Slovak Olympic Committee (1992-99), after which he was named Honorary President.
Co-opted onto the IOC in 1981, Černušák has represented the IOC to both Czechoslovakia and Slovakia. He remained on the IOC until he turned 80 in 2002, and was then made an Honorary Member. During his tenure he was a member of the Press Commission (1996-2001), and the Olympic Programme Commission (1983-94).
