Patrick Chamunda was a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 2002-15 and was then an Honorary Member until his death. On the IOC, Chamunda served as a member of the Sport for All Commission (2002-15), the Finance Commission (2006-14), and the Audit Commission (2013-16). He held a number of positions with the National Olympic Committee of Zambia, serving as Treasurer from 1977-81, then becoming a Vice-President in 1981-92, and finally becoming President in 1992, serving until 2005.
Chamunda was Chef de Mission for Zambia at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) from 1997-2009, and was instrumental in establishing the Olympic Youth Development Centre in Lusaka, Zambia.
In 2012 Chamunda received the Grand Order of Distinguished Service from the Zambian government for his services to sport. In 2015, upon his retirement as an IOC Member, he was given the Olympic Order in Silver for his services to the Olympic Movement.
