Chang Ung

Chang Ung was a sports administrator who was primarily involved in taekwondo, serving as President and then Honorary Life President of the one of the international taekwondo federations. He was named an IOC Member in 1996 and served through 2018 on the IOC, then becoming an Honorary Member.

Chang played basketball in DPR Korea, and was national team captain from 1956-67. He later coached with the Pyongyang Sports Club from 1968-73. He started in sports administration as a member of the DPR Korea Basketball Association from 1974-80, but later worked with the DPR Korea Rowing Association, in table tennis, and football, and served as secretary-general of the DPR Korea NOC from 1980-85.

In taekwondo, Chang was a founding member of the DPR Korea Taekwondo Committee. He later served as chairman of the GAISF Martial Arts Committee from 2003-05. He has been awarded several awards and honorary professorships, including an Honorary Doctor’s Degree of Physical Education at the State University for Physical Education and Sports of St. Petersburg, Russian Federation (2007); a Doctorate for Sociology and Political Science conferred by the State Commission for Conferring Academic Degrees and Titles of DPR Korea (2008); a Professorship at the Beijing Foreign Studies University, People’s Republic of China (2010); and the Gold Merit Order of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) in 2015.

With the IOC, Chang served on the following commissions: Sport for All (1997-2015), International Relations (2005-2015); Culture and Olympic Education (2014-2015), Public Affairs and Social Development through Sport (2015-2018), Culture and Olympic Heritage (2015-2018), and Sport and Active Society (2015-2018).
