Biography
A speed skater in his youth, Ottavio Cinquanta served in various official functions at the Italian Ice Sports Federation and International Skating Union (ISU) in the sections for short track and speed skating. In 1992, he was voted vice-president for speed skating at the ISU, and two years later became president. Although sometimes criticized for his lack of knowledge of figure skating, Cinquanta has held this position through 2009. He became a member of the IOC in 1996.
