Armenian-born boxer Vardan Zakarjan represented Germany in the flyweight class at the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics and lost in the first-round to the eventual champion Wijan Ponlid from Thailand. Zakarjan had moved from Armenia to Germany in 1994 at the age of 24, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
In 1999, Zakarjan obtained German nationality and became German national champion. In 2004, he won his second national title. After his active career, Zakarjan turned to coaching and was club coach at his home club DGF Flensburg, and later National Coach at the Regional Olympic Centre in Heidelberg. He then moved to Hamburg to became Chief Regional Coach and coach with the professional Universal Box Promotion Hamburg.
