Maxime, Count de Bousies was not a founding IOC Member, but was appointed by Pierre de Coubertin in October 1894, after he informed de Coubertin in September 1894 that he was available to become a member. He attempted to resign in February 1896, but de Coubertin would not accept it and he remained an IOC Member until 1900. De Bousies studied at Saint Stanislas College in Mons from 1876-81, and later at the Petit Seminaire Bonne Esperance, eventually obtaining a law degree from Louvain. From 1914-21 he served as Mayor of Harveng, but then moved to Bruxelles. He worked as a lawyer but was also a playwright and poet. He was also a co-owner of the Vivinus factory, which produced bicycles and cars, and was a founding member of the Automobile Club of Belgium.
