Sydney Farrer was a civil engineer who grew up in England but emigrated to South Africa in 1879. He formed the East Rand Proprietary Mines Co. with his brother, after gold was found in East Rand, and he and his brother became quite wealthy. In 1894 he returned to London where he managed the company from a distance until his death. Farrar was co-opted onto the IOC in December 1913, but died during World War I and had little Olympic involvement because of the War and his short tenure.
