Nikos Filaretos studied at Athina University, earning a degree in economics and commerce. He later became a commercial books examiner for Shell Greece from 1953-56, and then was foreign bank manager for Credit Bank from 1956-84. In sports he served as secretary-general of the Hellenic Olympic Committee from 1974-85, and became a member of the Ephoria of the International Olympic Academy starting in 1974. He also served as President of the International Olympic Academy from 1986-92 and 1997-2005, and was secretary-general of the International Committee for the Mediterranean Games from 1977.
Filaretos became an IOC Member in 1981, and served on multiple commissions, as follows: Press Commission (1982-83), chairman of the Commission for the International Olympic Academy and Olympic Education (1988-2005), Commission for the Olympic Programme (1983-84), and a member of the Pierre de Coubertin Commission starting in 1994. He resigned from the IOC in 2005 at age 80, dying only two years later.
