Mostafa Hashemi Taba graduated from Amur Kabir University of Technology as a textile engineer but then entered politics. He served as Minister of Heavy Industries in 1981-82. From 1994-2002 he was vice-president and then President of the Physical Education Organization in Iran. In 1996 he was one of 16 founding members of the reformist executives of the Construction Party. Hashemi Taba twice ran for President of Iran but was unsuccessful.
Hashemi Taba was President of the Iran National Olympic Committee, first from 1986-88 and then from 1996-2004. As President of the NOC he was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2000 and served through 2004. In 2014 Hashemi Taba was named by Mahmoud Goodarzi, Iran’s Minister of Sports and Youth, as an advisor on infrastructure, investment and development of the country’s sports.
