Kai Holm studied at the University of Horsens, graduating in 1961 with an engineering degree. He swam and played water polo at a national level and was a footballer in Denmark’s first league in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
Holm went into business, serving as CEO and owner of a construction firm from 1963-86, then as vice-president of Danish Pools and Lotto Company. He was also a mortgage banker from 1974-97.
In sports administration Holm became vice-president of the Danish Swimming and Lifesaving Federation (1974-77) and was then President from 1977-83. On the board of the Danish Sports Confederation, which merged with the Danish Olympic Committee, for 24 years, he was elected vice-president in 1983 and served as President from 1992-2007. He was also President of the International Masters Games Association (IMGA) from 1992-2021.
During his time as President of the Danish NOC Holm was named to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2002, serving through 2008. He stepped down to serve as chair of the 13th Olympic Congress in København in 2009. During his time on the IOC Holm was on the Sport for All Committee (2002-14), the International Relations Committee (2003-14), and the Evaluation Committee for the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014.
