Biography

Ahmed Jaffer grew up in India before Pakistan split from it. He was educated at the Anglo-Urdu High School and Deccan College, Poona, and then joined the family business, becoming a board member and chairman of several companies within the long-established trading business. He was also President of the Pakistan Chamber of Film Industry. When only 25-years-old Jaffer was one of two Muslim members elected to the Indian Parliament from Bombay Province, and in 1946 he was Deputy Whip of the Muslim League Party. He settled in Karachi, Pakistan after its partition from India, and served in the Pakistani Parliament. Jaffer was appointed adviser to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, was the leader of the Pakistan delegation to the 1954 World Government Parliamentary Conference in, and was a delegate to the United Nations in 1975. He was the first President of the Pakistan Olympic Association (1948-50) and led the Pakistan delegation to the Olympic Games of 1948 and 1952. Jaffer was co-opted onto the IOC in April 1949 and served until his resignation in November 1956.
