Gunilla Lindberg’s work in sports administration started with a lesser desk job at the Swedish Olympic Committee in 1969, but her talent was obvious, and she rose to become assistant secretary-general in 1984, and then secretary-general in 1989. She was Swedish administrative chief at every Olympic Games from 1972-80, and in 1976 was made a board member of the Swedish Bob and Luge Federation, serving for three years.
Lindberg became a board member of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in 1993, and a member of the executive board of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) from 1995-2002. She then served as ANOC secretary-general starting in 2004.
Lindberg was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1996. Her roles within the IOC since have been myriad. She has been a member of the IOC Executive Board from 2000-04 and 2011-19. She was IOC Vice-President 2004-08, serving as 1st Vice-President in 2006-08. She chaired the Evaluation Commission in 2011 and was chair of the Coordination Commission for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 from 2011-18.
