Ian St. John Lawson Johnston, the 2nd Baron Luke of Pavenham studied at Eton and Cambridge, where he competed in athletics and rowing. He then studied beef production in South American and Australia, in preparation to take over the family business. He later became director of several companies, a trustee of various charities, was President of the London Chamber of Commerce from 1952-55, and was chairman of the National Playing Fields Association. Baron Luke was co-opted onto the IOC in May 1951 and served until his resignation in February 1988, when he stepped down in favor of HRH Princess Anne. He was the first chairman of the Finance Commission, appointed in 1967, and was also appointed that year as the first chairman of the Commission for the Protection of the Olympic Symbols. He was made an Honorary Member at the end of his IOC tenure.
