Habib Macki earned engineering degrees from Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, which led him to a career in civil engineering, but he also played field hockey and football in his youth. He remained an active competitor until 1973 and, 10 years later, became vice-president of the Omani Football Association, a position that he held until 1985. From then on, he held numerous administrative positions in both Omani and international sport, most notably serving as an IOC member from 2009 through 2013. This made him the first Omani to serve in this capacity. He also served on committees that brought international tournaments to Oman, including the 2010 Asian Beach Games. For his achievements in these positions, he was awarded the Olympic Order in 2013.
