Algernon St. Maur Seymour, the Duke of Somerset, had little sporting interest although he was a member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. He attended Blundell’s School and the Royal Military Academy, and then spent many years ranching in America before returning home to oversee his estates. Given his minimal interest in sports, he was an unusual choice for the IOC when he was made a member in April 1913, and in the same year he was made Chairman of the British Olympic Association (BOA). The Duke of Somerset served on the IOC until 1920 and was chairman of the BOA until 1919, but had minimal duties because of World War I.
