Giulio Onesti acquired bachelor degrees in arts and law and became a lawyer, serving as the director of the review, Sport Law. As a youth he competed regionally and nationally in rowing, and also had major interests in hunting and fishing. After World War II Onesti became President of CONI, the Italian Olympic Committee for 34 years (1944-78), and he was the main driver behind the formation of the General Assembly of National Olympic Committees, which later became known as the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC). Onesti served as President of the Organizing Committee for the 1956 Cortina Winter Games and the 1960 Roma Summer Games.
Onesti became an IOC Member in 1964 and served until his death in 1981. He helped lead the Solidarity Commission and served as Chairman of the Cultural Commission. Onesti was highly interested in art and antiques and collected antique earthenware as a hobby.
