Biography

Henri Rakotobe studied law and classics in Paris and Algiers and later had a distinguished legal career. In sports he competed in athletics and tennis, reaching the finals the national tennis championships. Rakotobe was President of the Madagascan Judo Federation and was the founding President of the Madagascar Olympic Committee in 1963. He was co-opted onto the IOC in 1968, serving until his death in 1971.

Rakotobe became a member of Parliament in 1956, later presiding over the National Assembly, and then the Congress of Parliament. He also served as Minister of Justice, but in 1960, left that post to lead the Higher Council of Institutions.
