Mounir Saleh Sabet studied military science and aeronautics and after college worked with Marsa Alan Aviation Services (EMAAS) and Egyptian Aviation Services (EAS), eventually becoming chair and managing director of the board of both organizations. His sister Suzanne is the wife of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, and thus was the former First Lady of Egypt.
Saleh Sabet was a sport rifle shooter and on the Egyptian national shooting team in 1965. From 1984-92 and 2000-08 he served as President of the Egyptian Shooting Federation. From 1991-2013 he was President of the African Shooting Confederation and was a council member on the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF).
From 1990-92 and 1996-2009 Saleh Sabet was President of the Egyptian Olympic Committee and then was named Honorary President. He was co-opted onto the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1998, serving until 2016, after which he was made an Honorary Member. During his time on the IOC he served on several commissions, including Culture and Olympic Education (1999-2015), Culture and Olympic Heritage (2015-17), the Coordination Commission for the 2004 Games of the Olympiad, and on the Evaluation Commission for the 2016 Games of the Olympiad.
Because of his relationship to President Hosni Mubarak, Saleh Sabet was placed under house arrest during the Arab Spring uprisings in 2011, which prevented him from attending IOC Sessions for a time.
