As a youth Henri Sérandour competed in swimming, water polo, and handball. In 1961 he became a sports teacher at Saint-Vincent High School and in 1967 became sports director of the city of Dinard. In 1974 he was elected vice-president of the French Swimming Federation (FNN). He was then named the leader of FNN from 1981-93, helping re-structure their finances. From 1984-92 Sérandour was vice-president of the European Swimming League (LEN).
Sérandour was named to the Executive Committee of the Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) in 1992, serving until 1996. In 1985 he became vice-president of the French Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) and was elected President in 1993. In his position as President of CNOSF he was elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2000, stepping down in 2007 when he turned 70.
