Biography

Walther Tröger studied law at the University of Erlangen, graduating in 1951. He later served as managing director and then secretary-general of the German National Olympic Committee, eventually becoming President and Honorary President. Tröger was mayor of the Olympic Village at the 1972 München Olympic Games, and was responsible for negotiations with the Black September terrorists who eventually murdered 11 Israeli hostages. Internationally Tröger served on the sports commission of FIBA from 1964-94.

Tröger was made an IOC Member in 1989, and served until 2009, when he turned 80. He served on numerous commissions within the IOC, including Olympic Programme (1971-94), Sport for All (1984-99), Study Commission for the Preparation of the Olympic Games (1990-91), Olympic Solidarity (1985-89), Coordination Commission for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics (1992-98), Coordination Commission for the 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics (1996-2002), and the Evaluation Commission for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games (1998-2006).
