Through 2014, Benedikt Waage remained the only Icelandic member of the IOC. He served from 1946 until his death in 1966. Waage was elected onto the Icelandic Sports Federation, and later was Treasurer and Vice-President before becoming President in 1926. In 1921 he founded the Icelandic Olympic Committee. Waage was a top sportsman who was Icelandic swimming champion in 1911 and played on national champion football teams in 1912 and 1919. In 1926, at age 37, he was on the winning team at the national gymnastics championships.
