Syed Wajid Ali studied at Lahore and Simla before joining the Army and then joined the family textile business. He later became chairman of the company. Wajid Ali was President of the Pakistani Olympic Committee from 1978-2004 and also served as President of the Pakistan Amateur Athletic Federation. Wajid Ali was co-opted onto the IOC in May 1959 and resigned in July 1996 at age 85, being succeeded by his son Syed Shahid Ali.
