Wang Zhengting initially studied at Peiyang University, but then spent two years in Tokyo as Secretary of the YMCA. He then left for the United States, spending a year at the University of Michigan before graduating from Yale University in 1910. Wang was one of the founders of organized sport in China, serving as President of the Far Eastern Athletic Association from 1920-21 and as Honorary President in 1922-23. He was also President of the Chinese National Athletic Federation for many years. Wang was co-opted onto the IOC in March 1922 by a postal vote, and remained on the IOC for 35 years, resigning in 1957, and then becoming an honorary member.
Wang was prominent politically in China, serving as a delegate to the Versailles Peace Conference in 1919-20 and as Chinese Ambassador to the United States in 1936-39. After his return to China in 1940 he left for Hong Kong for five years, before moving to Shanghai where he established a financial empire, eventually moving back to Hong Kong where he lived out his life.
