Biography

Marian Velicu was a Romanian boxer who fought in the light flyweight division. Velicu won bronze at the 2000 European Amateur Boxing Championships in Finland, earning himself a spot on the Romanian Olympic team. At the 2000 Sydney Games he defeated Ramazan Ballioğlu before losing to Maikro Romero after the referee stopped the contest. The following year he won silver at the World Amateur Championships in Belfast, with Yan Barthelemí winning gold. After his retirement from the sport Velicu became a police officer in București. He was only 47-years-old when he died in July 2024 following a long illness.
