Biography

Born in Birmingham, England in 1947, Janet Sawbridge began her ice skating career at her local rink and became the runner-up in the junior British ladies in 1961. Within two years Sawbridge had formed a partnership with David Hickinbottom, with the pair competing in ice dancing competitions across the globe. They finished second at the British Championships in 1963, before winning back-to-back national titles in 1964 and 1965. They also had impressive results at international competitions, winning bronze at the 1963 European Championships, followed by silver in 1964 and 1965. Their success was replicated at the World Championships with a bronze in 1964 and silver a year later.

From 1966 to 1971 Sawbridge then partnered with Jon Lane, with the pair continuing to achieve consistent results. At the British Championships they won three consecutive bronze medals from 1966 to 1968, followed by silver in 1969. They won bronze at both the World and European Championships in 1968, before winning silver at the latter in 1969. During this time Sawbridge and Lane also competed in a demonstration event at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics.

Sawbridge finished her career partnering with Peter Dalby, with the pair competing together from 1971 until 1974. They became British champions and won bronze at the European Championships in 1972. One year later the pair finished as runners-up at the British Championships, with Sawbridge being honoured with an MBE for services to the sport in 1974. After her retirement from the ice she became a coach, famously pairing Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
