Toni Schmid was only a 16-year-old when he made his first remarkable climbs. Starting in 1929 he achieved first ascents of various mountain faces of the Alps including some in ice, the highlight being the first ascent of the Matterhorn North Face with his brother Franz in 1931. In May 1932 Toni Schmid fell to his death trying to climb the Northwest Face of the Wiesbachhorn in the federal state of Salzburg, previously a classic ice wall. He had been a construction engineer by profession.
