Biography

Akiko Kijimuta was a Japanese tennis player who played professionally from 1983 to 1994. Kijimuta achieved a career-best singles ranking of 49 in the world in March 1990, and a doubles ranking of 93 in the world in August 1991.

Kijimuta competed in the singles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when tennis was a demonstration sport but lost her opening round match to Sandra Cecchini. Later that year she won her one and only ITF singles final when she beat Niege Dias of Brazil in straight sets in Matsuyama, Japan. At the 1990 Asian Games she won two gold medals, one each in the singles and team, along with a bronze in the doubles. Kijimuta’s best performance at a Grand Slam was in the singles at the 1992 French Open when she reached the fourth round.
