Thomas Schmidt was a German white-water canoeist who won the gold medal in the kayak singles at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Four years later at Athens, Schmidt finished fifth. With the German white-water team, he won the gold medal at the 2003 World Championships, having won the bronze medal two years earlier. At the Europeans, the team won three gold medals in 1996, 1998, and 2002.
Schmidt studied mechanical engineering and graduated. He also occasionally worked as a colour commentator with the German TV channel Eurosport. Schmidt also became a sports administrator within the International Canoe Federation. He was awarded the Silver Bay Leaf, Germany’s highest sports award.
