Austrian cyclist Matthias Buxhofer placed 50th in the road race at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. In 1992 and 2006, he won the national road race titles. Buxhofer started his cycling career as a cross cyclist before turning to road racing. A professional between 2000-05 he rode in the 2002 Giro d’Italia, finishing 55th overall.
In 2002, Buxhofer tested positive for norandrosterone during the Tour of Denmark and was subsequently dismissed by his team. His attempt to prove his innocence was unsuccessful, and he was banned for two years.
In 2007, Buxhofer turned to duathlon and triathlon and participated several times at the Ironman at Hawai’i. In 2009, he won a bronze medal at the Ironman European Championships in his age group. In 2008, he won the duathlon and triathlon national titles in his age group.
