Austrian road cyclist René Haselbacher finished 34th in the individual time trial at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. He also competed in the road race but could not finish.
Haselbacher started his sports career as a football (soccer) player but turned to cycling at the age of 14. In 2006, he won the International Rheinland-Pfalz Rundfahrt as his finest sporting achievement. Haselbacher was named Austrian Cyclist of the Year in 1998 and won the national road race in 2002.
In 2011, Haselbacher moved to South Africa, where he got married. The couple then founded a company for the design and manufacture of custom-made cycling apparel.
