Carlos Pedroso was an incredibly talented épée fencer who won a plethora of medals at international events during his career. Pedroso first started competing at a young age and won gold in the team event at the 1986 Central American and Caribbean Games. One year later he won bronze in the individual and team events at the Summer Universiade, in addition to winning gold in the same events at the Pan American Games in Indianapolis. He repeated his success at the Pan American Games by doing the individual and team double at the Games in Mar del Plata and Winnipeg in 1995 and 1999, respectively.
Pedroso finally won gold at the Fencing World Championships when Cuba won the team event in Cape Town in 1997. The following year he won individual and team gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo. In 2000 he capped off his career with a bronze medal in the team event at the Sydney Games. Tragically Pedroso was killed after suffering severe burns in a domestic accident in December 2024. He was 57.
