Walter López competed for the Honduran U-23 team in 1999-2000 and then was on the national team from 2000-05. A wingback, he played for multiple clubs in his career, as follows: Platense – 1997-99 and 2008-09; BSV Bad Bleiberg – 1999-2001; Austria Salzburg – 2001-02; Marathón – 2002-04; Olimpia – 2004-07; Motagua – 2007-08; Deportes Savio in 2009; Peñarol La Mesilla in 2009-10, and Cobán Imperial in 2012.
López was murdered in August 2015 by gangs at the Mexican border. He was outside the Estadio Comunal stadium in La Mesilla, preparing to watch a match while he and his wife were in town visiting her family.
