Paul Loicq is one of the few Olympians to have appeared at the Games as an athlete, coach, and official. He was a player-coach in ice hockey for Belgium at the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics. Playing for Club des Patineurs de Bruxelles, he competed at the European Championships in 1910, 1911, 1914, and 1925, winning bronze medals at his first three appearances. He also skated at the 1912 LIHG Tournament. Loicq refereed hockey matches at the 1920 Olympics, and the 1924, 1928, and 1936 Winter Olympics.
Loicq was President of the Belgian Ice Hockey Federation from 1920-35, and President of the LIHG (League Internationale de Hockey sur Glace) from 1922-47, the longest tenure of any President of what is now the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). He was a founder of the International College of Referees.
During World War II Loicq served in the Belgian resistance and, after the war, was on the Nuremberg war crime tribunal in his day job as a lawyer. Loicq is a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the IIHF Hall of Fame. The Paul Loicq award is presented annually by the IIHF Hall of Fame for service to international ice hockey.
