Biography

Harald Lückner has the distinction of being the first European player to be drafted by an NHL team twice. He was drafted in 1977 by the New York Islanders, but as the Islanders did not offer him a contract within one year, he was drafted in 1978 by the Vancouver Canucks, but he also never played with the Canucks. Instead, Lückner played most of his career from 1975-89 with Färjestad BK, except his last season as an active player from 1988-89, when he played with Sparta Sarpsborg. With Färjestad, Lückner won Swedish titles in 1981, 1986 and 1988. Internationally, Lückner won an Olympic bronze in 1980, World Championship silver in 1981 and European Championship silver in 1981.

After finishing his playing career, Lückner worked as an ice hockey coach. He was assistant coach of Färjestad BK from 1989-93, before becoming head coach of Färjestad’s junior team from 1993-00, and Lückner was head coach of the Swedish national junior team from 1995-98. He was head coach of HV71 from 2000-03 and from 2003-05 and 2008-12 was head coach of Mora IK. Lückner was head coach of MoDo HK from 2005-08, coaching them to the 2007 Swedish title, the same year he was selected as Swedish Ice hockey Coach of the Year, and in 2012 he became head coach of Linköpings HC. He also worked as an ice hockey commentator for Viasat Sport.
