Belgian painter, engraver and writer Alfred Duriau studied at the Academy of Mons, and later at the art academy in Leuve and in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts, from where he graduated. He had also grown up in Mons because his mother was a caretaker at the academy. Winning the Prix de Rome for engraving in 1906 allowed him to study in Roma for two years. He was also a professor in Mons from 1912-47. Duriau had a preference for landscapes of Mons, still lifes, figures and portraits.
