Belgian architect André Verbeke was awarded the bronze medal at the 1928 Amsterdam Art Competitions in the category Architecture, Design for Town Planning for his work Design for a Marathon Park. Nevertheless, no information could be detected regarding a model or even realization of the Marathon Park. Maybe he was still a student at the College of Fine Arts in Antwerp at the time of the 1932 Olympic Games. He established his own office in the Flemish town of Sint-Niklaas in 1935, which was also the center of his activities. In his early years, he worked in an orthogonal cubistic style. From an early romantic style, he later developed into a more objective direction. His architectural style is described as orthogonal cubist, but undogmatic.
