Dick Hart trained at the Royal Academy Schools, and much of his early work was influenced by Cézanne. Hart was later recognised as an illustrator, however, mostly for children’s books. Some works he was associated with included The Day Before Yesterday, which recalled life at the turn of the 20th century, The Starveling, a story about an abandoned kitten, and the 1962 book Piccolo and Maria by Anita Hewett, about a little boy, and a donkey
